Foot and Ankle – Orthopaedic Surgeon

I took up post as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in February 2010 as the first surgeon in Fife with a major subspecialty interest in foot and ankle surgery. I perform the full range of foot and ankle surgery including ankle replacements, hindfoot deformity surgery, ligament reconstructions and arthroscopic ankle surgery using modern techniques. I carry out forefoot deformity correction using techniques which include the scarf osteotomy and minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery for bunion correction; these procedures allow rapid post-operative mobilisation without the need for plaster casting. I also perform general and specialist foot and ankle trauma surgery. I introduced the Cartiva implant to Scotland for treatment of osteoarthritis of the great toe (hallux rigidus).

Having studied medicine in Edinburgh as an undergraduate, I qualified in 2000 and remained in Edinburgh for my basic and higher specialist surgical training. I undertook a specialist training fellowship in complex surgery of the foot and ankle in Glasgow in 2009, followed by a lower limb reconstruction fellowship in Toronto. I have undertaken further specialist training in ankle replacement and forefoot deformity correction surgery with leading European foot and ankle specialists in cities including Zurich, Bordeaux, Paris and Padua.

I have taken a leading role in developing foot and ankle surgical services in Scotland and across the United Kingdom. I organised and taught on specialist aspects of foot and ankle surgery for trainee surgeons and other health professionals.

I am a prominent member of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society; I was elected to its Scientific Committee in 2014 and onto the Council in 2017.
